The Netherlands Antilles consist of five islands: Curacao and Bonaire off Venezuela and Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten, east of the U.S. Virgin Islands. (The island of Saint Martin is shared with the Department of Guadeloupe, an overseas territory of France).
The Netherlands Antilles is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Dutch government is responsible for matters of defense and foreign affairs. However, the federation was dissolved and the Kingdom of the Netherlands is composed of the Netherlands (including Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba) and the autonomous territories of Aruba, Curacao and St. Maarten.
Willemstad, Curacao, is the capital of the Netherlands Antilles.
The islands are volcanic mountainous interior. The climate is tropical.
Environment of the Netherlands Antilles:
The Netherlands Antilles are in two groups of islands: Curacao and Bonaire are off the Venezuelan coast, together with Aruba, an autonomous independent member of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. These islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao) are often referred to as the ABC islands or the Leeward Islands.
Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Martin are part of the Windward Island chain that also includes the Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Guadeloupe and a number of other Caribbean countries. All environmental work in the Netherlands Antilles is performed at a base known as the DCNA umbrella (Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance). DCNA represents formal cooperation between conservation management organizations of the nature of the Dutch Caribbean. The foundation’s goal is to safeguard biodiversity and natural heritage of the islands of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba to support and assist the efforts of nature conservation throughout the Dutch Caribbean.
